AMEC-BCI was secured by Polk County Natural Resource Division to convert an abandoned wastewater treatment plant site into a multipurpose stormwater park. The stormwater system consists of a network of off-line wet detention ponds that receive inflow from a 90-acre residential basin. The park includes a walk path with various exercise stations and education kiosks. The park is readily accessible to the adjacent neighborhood, thereby creating a functional community amenity.
This design process involved utilizing existing topography to maximize detention time and preferential flow paths. AMEC-BCI also provided roadway flood duration relief for the adjacent subdivisions, as well as stormwater treatment for water flowing to Lake Howard and ultimately the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes.
A major component of the project involved the volumetric determination of the onsite residual wastewater sludge. Due to the material’s physical and chemical composition, it was deemed unusable as on-site fill material and was removed and deposited at the county’s skeet range.
AMEC-BCI was responsible for all aspects of the project including conceptual design development, geotechnical investigations, design and permitting, and limited construction administration.
