Lakeland, FL - August 27, 2010
For the second consecutive year, BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc. was named one of Polk County’s Best Places to Work. The Lakeland-based engineering firm received the honor during Polk Works’ annual awards breakfast. The distinction is given to businesses that are the most innovative in the areas of motivating and retaining their employees, training and development initiatives, and workplace practices which include commitment to a work/life balance. “Only an elite few have accomplished a similar level of commitment to their workforce, and we honor BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc. for understanding the importance and value of their employees,” stated a letter from Polk Works 2020 to BCI President and CEO Richard M. Powers.
The Best Places to Work Awards are determined by employee surveys and a panel of judges. This year’s responses from BCI employees included comments concerning the firm’s reaction to the growing cost of employee benefits. “During the annual review of benefits, BCI, like many other companies, was faced with a substantial increase in cost,” stated one respondent. “However, rather than passing the rate hike on to its employees, BCI made up the difference.” Another survey highlighted BCI’s commitment to professional development and how the program offers every employee – from its administrative staff to its technical teams – the chance to pursue various opportunities in this area.
BCI was founded in the 1970s as a geotechnical engineering firm. Today, the firm supports nearly 200 employees and nine office locations including its headquarters in Lakeland and satellite offices in Tavares, Palatka, Palm Beach Gardens, Plant City, Tampa, Brighton, Mich., Denver, Colo., and St. Louis, Mo. The company was recently named to ENR’s list of Top 200 Environmental Firms. A multidisciplinary engineering and environmental consulting firm, BCI’s primary focus is to develop comprehensive solutions to complex engineering and environmental issues using state of the art professional engineering and scientific resources. The firm’s professionals offer expertise in the areas of civil engineering, geoenvironmental and remediation services, geotechnical engineering and mining, forensic engineering and science, and water resources.
