BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., a Lakeland-based engineering firm, raised more than $18,000 for the United Way.  Through employee contributions and fundraising events, BCI employees surpassed this year’s goal of $16,000 and raised $18,277 during its annual company campaign. The Lakeland firm has participated in the fundraiser for more than a decade.

According to BCI President & CEO Richard M. Powers, who has participated in the annual fundraiser for the past 30 years, the United Way concept of ‘neighbors helping neighbors’ resonates strongly with the BCI team. “We are excited about the success of BCI’s 2011 company campaign, as it was the most successful in the company’s history, and are proud of the great support and participation from our employees.” BCI’s United Way Committee was led by Human Resources Specialist Stacy East. Along with employee contributions, various events were held to raise money, including bake and food sales, contests, and spirit days.

“I enjoy knowing that all the hard work of the committee and the generosity of our employees are helping our community,” East said. “A few years ago, I visited one of the agencies that United Way supports. I saw first hand how grateful they are toward companies like ours for supporting the United Way.”

Ricardo KiriakidisBCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., a Lakeland-based engineering firm, recently hired Dr. Ricardo Kiriakidis, PE, as a project engineer for BCI’s geotechnical engineering and mining department. Kiriakidis has more than four years experience in geotechnical engineering and has worked on more than 300 projects throughout Florida. While at BCI, he has worked on forensic inspections and has reviewed more than 200 reports. During the review process, he selects the appropriate remedial method for each case, including compaction, intrusion and chemical grouting, as well as underpinning.

As part of the design team, Kiriakidis provides engineering recommendations for a variety of items, including the design of pavements, stormwater management areas, foundations, and retaining wall design. His responsibilities have also included selecting soil boring locations, evaluating soil types, and performing limited literature review of site conditions. Kiriakidis received his doctorate degree in civil engineering from West Virginia University. As part of his academic research, he studied seepage in earth slopes and wrote the dissertation, “Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Seepage Through Longitudinal Drains.” He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

BCI Awarded for making The Zweig Letter Hot Firm 2010 ListBCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., a Lakeland-based engineering firm, was recently presented an award for making The Zweig Letter Hot Firm 2010 List.  BCI President and CEO Richard M. Powers, PG, CPG, accepted the honor during the publication’s annual conference held in Washington, D.C. The event is held each year to recognize the most successful architecture, engineering, and environmental firms based on their revenue growth rate and profitability in an industry that includes more than 89,000 companies. The Lakeland firm ranked 99th on the list published by ZweigWhite, a management consulting and research firm.

“BCI is honored to be included on this prestigious list of firms,” Powers said.  During the conference, Powers participated in a panel discussion that highlighted the attributes of purpose driven companies and the market place advantages derived from such a business philosophy. He stated, “… purpose driven companies are generally very successful because the purpose provides the foundation for a consistently delivered and reinforced message that ultimately becomes the culture of the enterprise.”

BCI was founded in the 1970s as a geotechnical engineering firm. Today, the firm supports 200 employees and nine office locations including its headquarters in Lakeland and satellite offices in Tavares, Palatka, Palm Beach Gardens, Plant City, and Tampa, Florida, and Brighton, Mich., Denver, Colo., and St. Louis, Mo. Along with recognition on the Hot Firm List, BCI also appeared on this year’s Engineering News-Record’s Top 200 Environmental Design Firms and was named one of “Polk County’s Best Places to Work” by Polk Works for the second consecutive year.

James Goetz  Senior GeologistBCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., a Lakeland-based engineering firm, recently hired James Goetz as a senior geologist for BCI’s forensic engineering and science department.

Goetz has more than 42 years of experience in geologic and environmental investigations. He specializes in forensic geology, performing geophysical related sinkhole investigations, as well as phase I & phase II site assessments, remedial selection, post remediation activities, and drilling operations.

A certified neutral evaluator and qualified stormwater management inspector, Goetz has received numerous certifiable safety trainings by OSHA and FDOT for hazardous waste, confined entry, UST removals, and stormwater management. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of South Florida.

Richard M. Powers, president and CEO of BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc.,Richard M. Powers, president and CEO of BCI Engineers & Scientists, Inc., recently completed his term as president of the American Geological Institute (AGI). Powers’s term ended on Nov. 1, when he passed the gavel to incoming AGI President Skip Hobbs. He will continue to serve on the Institute’s Executive Committee until November 2011, which will complete six years of continuous service to AGI, a nonprofit federation of 49 associations that represent more than 120,000 geologists, geophysicists, and other earth scientists.

During his tenure as president, Powers said AGI increased its membership, hosted a very successful geoscience education summit, increased communication with its member societies, and reviewed its current business model to assess its relevance for the future. In his new role as past president, Powers will continue his emphasis on increased communications and planning for the institute’s future.

In addition to his AGI service, Powers has held leadership roles in several other professional societies. He has served as national president of the National American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG) and Florida Section President for the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration and AIPG. In recognition of his professional accomplishments, Powers was awarded AIPG Florida Section Geologist of the Year in 1991 and the National AIPG Martin Van Couvering Memorial Award in 2006.
