AMEC-BCI was contracted to construct a GIS model to facilitate computing the costs involved in phosphate mine reclamation. The model was based on four GIS layers and associated cost estimates. The GIS layers needed for the model included a Mine Plan Reclamation Program, Post Reclamation Land Use, a Habitat Area Plan, and Mining Sequence Plan.
A Reclamation Table consisting of estimated costs for each land use class for reclamation was also needed. The model computes the costs per year as described by the Mining Sequence Plan for reclamation. Variables in the table and polygons in the GIS layers are easily modified to offer rapid estimations for alternatives analysis. The model was programmed in ESRI ArcObjects, and a toolbar button was added to the user interface.
