Sinkhole Damage
Investigations & Remediation

Scope
Over the past 17 years BCI has completed more than 1,800 subsidence and sinkhole damage investigations at sites throughout Florida. Much of this work is conducted for insurance purposes to evaluate settlement damage to residential and commercial properties.
Specific services include:
-
Emergency sinkhole response
-
Sinkhole damage investigations
-
Sinkhole remediation design
-
Remediation and construction monitoring
-
Expert witness services
A comprehensive methodology is employed for individual site investigations including examination of regional and site-specific geologic, hydrologic, and physiographic data; detailed site mapping and damage assessment; shallow soil exploration (typically by hand auger boring and cone penetrometer probings); geophysical testing (typically ground penetrating radar); deep soil exploration using standard penetration test (SPT) borings; and laboratory soil testing, which can be performed at BCI’s U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) approved soil and materials testing laboratory.
This data is then compiled and evaluated to determine the geologic and geotechnical conditions at the site and the potential for sinkhole activity as the cause of settlement damage to the property. Dependent upon the identified cause of damage, a remedial plan is prepared to stabilize the structure. Typical remedial methods employed include compaction and slurry grouting, cap grouting, shallow polymer chemical grouting, foundation underpinning, grade beam installation and other foundation improvements.
