Landfill assessments, hydrogeologic monitoring, and groundwater discharge permitting are a few of the services BCI has provided to our municipal and private clients. We have completed these services for landfill closures, commercial and residential development permitting, compliance reporting, and insurance claims, among others.

The Edw. C. Levy Company (Levy) owns and operates Levy-Penn Landfill, a Type III construction debris landfill located in Taylor, Michigan. BCI has been working on this project and assisting Levy with environmental monitoring since 2004. BCI completes routine environmental monitoring data evaluation activities in accordance with the approved Hydrogeologic Monitoring Program at the site.

BCI’s services were obtained by Givaudan Flavors Corporation to perform a water permit review and a regulatory and geologic assessment of their plant in Lakeland, Florida. The plant consisted of a product warehouse, a processing building, a maintenance storage building, two holding tank farms, and an office building situated on a 9-acre parcel.

Okeechobee Land Development, Inc. operates a limestone gravel and aggregate mine of approximately 1,200 acres in Port Mayaca, Florida. The site is located along the southern side of State Road 76, approximately one mile east of the shore of Lake Okeechobee.

BCI was charged with the task of evaluating hydrogeologic data collected by others, the development and organization of a groundwater quality database and a reinterpretation of the site's hydrogeologic setting. Based on these evaluations, BCI prepared and submitted a site Hydrogeologic Monitoring Plan (HGMP) to the MDEQ on Richfield Landfill, Inc.'s behalf. This plan focused on groundwater monitoring of three aquifers underlying the landfill.

In 2001, BCI completed a site assessment and initial abatement activities to address the release of "free product" unleaded gasoline into the environment. Due to the initial emergency nature of this work, interaction with federal, state, and local units of government in response to the product release was essential.

BCI responded to a diesel fuel spill into Lake Erie to complete initial abatement activities. The release was the result of a leaking product distribution line associated with a diesel fuel underground storage tank system located at a gas station in Luna Pier, Michigan.

A planned unit development required a groundwater discharge site for 300,000 gallons per day. BCI completed an evaluation of multiple locations in search of a suitable site. Detailed hydrogeological investigation and permitting and aquifer testing for the development of a rapid-rate infiltration discharge area were performed and a permit submitted to the MDEQ. The site was permitted by the MDEQ.

BCI completed a remedial investigation, feasibility study and remedial action plan of an abandoned dump site identified as the Bray Road Dump located within the Genesee County Recreation Area. This work has been performed for the Genesee Parks and Recreation Department and the Genesee County Board of Commissioners. The objective is to provide Genesee County with information pertaining to the determination of whether hazardous substances arepresent on the site and, if present, whether concentrations exceed current MDEQ risk-based standards.

BCI staff performed routine environmental monitoring services for the Ann Arbor Landfill (AALF) for over 10 years. In 1997, BCI was contracted to complete groundwater monitoring services and to modify the existing environmental monitoring plan for the AALF. In 1998, BCI’s scope of work was modified to include landfill gas monitoring services. During 1999 and 2000, BCI completed the abandonment of numerous wells and the installation of additional methane probes adjacent to and north of the AALF.

The Tay-Ban Corporation (Tay-Ban), a subsidiary of Republic Services, Inc., owns and operates a Type II sanitary landfill in Birch Run, Michigan. BCI has been working on this project and assisting Tay-Ban for more than 15 years. As a component of a landfill expansion permit application, BCI prepared and submitted a revised site Hydrogeologic Monitoring Plan to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment (MDNRE) on behalf of Tay-Ban.
