City of Ann Arbor | Ann Arbor, Michigan | July 1997 - Ongoing
BCI staff have been performing routine environmental monitoring services for the Ann Arbor Land Fill (AALF) since 1997. During this time, various monitoring and remedial action improvements have been developed and implemented including: 1) abandonment of over 60 wells; 2) revision of the site hydrogeologic monitoring program;3) resolution of landfill leachate mercury monitoring issues; 4) installation of dedicated low flow sampling devices; 5) reduction of field sampling time by five days; 6) redesign of purge wells to eliminate prior screen plugging issues; 7) implementation of a purge well maintenance program; 8) redesign of Phase II area leachate discharge sump lines to eliminate breakage; 9) implementation of flow-through sample monitoring of groundwater samples; and 10) creation of a revised database management system and mass balance evaluations of purge waters.
In 1997, BCI was contracted to complete groundwater monitoring services and to modify the existing environmental monitoring plan for the AALF.
In 1998, BCI's scope of work was modified to include landfill gas monitoring services. During 1999 and 2000, BCI completed the abandonment of numerous wells and the installation of additional methane probes adjacent to and north of the AALF. Maintenance services of the existing remedial systems and sampling of the wastewater discharges to the city's sewer system were initiated in 2002. As part of these maintenance activities, BCI responded to a groundwater discharge line failure and a sanitary sewer overflow. Frequent maintenance activities related to the purge wells were resolved through the completion of a redesign, replacement and specific maintenance program of three purge wells.
BCI, in addition to completing routine groundwater and methane monitoring services, has also assisted the City with repair of the Phase I area cap, 1,4-dioxane treatability and pilot test programs, and Phase I area leachate outbreak and off-site remedial action activities.
