Forensic Engineering & Science

Insurance services in the State of Florida are governed by the Department of Financial Regulation and are mandated to indemnify all parties involved. That is the premise upon which our Forensic Engineering & Science group conducts all investigations. Insurance companies, lenders, and land owners depend upon the fair and reliable reporting provided by our team of experts. Our highly trained professionals will look beyond the surface to determine the specific cause of your loss, while maintaining respect for all stakeholders involved.

Our team is comprised of specialized engineers and scientists, who apply analytical skills and years of experience to unravel and mitigate the consequences of accidents and failures that give rise to property damages and insurance claims. AMEC-BCI’s Forensic Engineering & Science group is committed to serving as a single source for expertise in the following areas: the investigation of residential and commercial property damages; the environmental assessment of commercial and industrial properties; and the litigation support necessary should matters need to be resolved in court. Our objective is to provide concise, comprehensive, and accurate reporting, leading to the expeditious processing and successful resolution of investigative assignments.

Insurance Services AMEC-BCI carries out sinkhole investigations in accordance with §627.7072 Florida Statutes, using a comprehensive and robust approach to gather sufficient evidence to determine the presence or absence of sinkhole activity. A project will typically involve desk-top research into available published geologic, physiography and hydrology, followed by: detailed site mapping; an internal and external damage assessment; shallow soil exploration (including hand auger borings, test pits and cone penetrometer testing); geophysical survey (typically Ground Penetrating Radar – GPR); deep soil borings with Standard Penetration Testing (SPT); and laboratory soil testing, performed within our U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) approved soil and materials testing laboratory.

Our reports are designed to be clear and unambiguous. Our intent is to provide a document that is easy for a loss adjuster to use while still detailing the thorough, defendable, scientific techniques used to arrive at our conclusions.

Once all of the data has been collated, an evaluation is carried out, a determination on the likely cause of damage is made and a report issued. Each report is prepared under the responsible charge of a Florida licensed Professional Engineer and/or a Florida licensed Professional Geologist, as proscribed by §627.706 Florida Statutes. Dependent upon the identified cause of damage, the report may include a plan on stabilization of the ground beneath the structure. Typical remediation techniques that will be considered include compaction and slurry grouting, shallow polymer chemical grouting, foundation underpinning, grade beam installation and other foundation improvements.

Our clients retain us to reach a definitive conclusion. We understand you need a clear, concise, and bold statement of our conclusions, and need us to be ready to professionally support our findings in court, if necessary. We accept this responsibility and are committed to reaching supportable conclusions that both our clients and their policyholder will have confidence in.

AMEC-BCI agrees that timeliness of a report is paramount and therefore place an emphasis on meeting your timetables and schedules. Critical to producing successful results, is our commitment to communicating with you and your policy holder from the time of the assignment until the delivery of the final report.

Final report delivery-dates are calculated by our project management software and estimated dates are updated throughout the investigation. Weekly reports detailing the status of the investigation are generated for senior-level staff review, and status updates are sent to you weekly, keeping you and your policy holder informed throughout each phase of the investigation.

Project reports include the scope of assignment, site description, site inspection and damage assessment, subsurface-condition assessment, supporting data, graphs, maps, and photographs, and project certification by a professional geologist and professional engineer. If sinkhole activity is identified, then a remedial plan with estimated costs is included.

Upon completion of the remedial program, AMEC-BCI will provide you a summary report on the project.

The report will include a site map showing final “as built” locations of grout injection points, summary of material quantities, and a certification statement by a licensed AMEC-BCI geotechnical engineer indicating the remediation program was completed in accordance with project specifications.
