Lake Fannie Berm Restoration

Scope
The Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) maintains several structures along the Winter Haven Chain of Lakes in Polk County. BCI has provided comprehensive professional engineering services to Kisinger Campo & Associates (KCA) and the SWFWMD associated with the structures. One such structure assessed was the Lake Fannie Berm adjacent to the P-7 Structure.
Following a major storm event that overtopped the structure and created seepage conditions through the underlying peat soils, BCI performed a condition assessment of the structure to identify deficiencies.
This included an assessment of the environmental impacts to the downstream wetland. Hydrologic modeling was performed to simulate the storm conditions and determine the adequate flow capacities and embankment height requirements for future events.
BCI prepared a remedial plan for the structure consisting of the installation of new emergency discharge structures, additional earthwork placement to provide adequate embankment height and freeboard, and increased erosion protection measures to prevent erosion during extreme events.
